Topic: Why Spyro the Dragon is a better platform adventure game than Super Mario 64

 

1. Introduce the topic

2. Briefly summarize each game so that anyone in the audience who isn't familiar with either game understands what you are talking about generally.

a) Spyro the Dragon: You play as a purple dragon named Spyro who is on a quest to defeat Gnasty Gnorc after he turned all of the dragon elders to stone. In the game you explore five overworlds with various portals in each leading to different sub-levels. Within the overworld and sub-levels, your goal is to collect all of the gems, rescue all of the dragons trapped in stone, and collect any dragon eggs stolen by egg thieves.

b) Super Mario 64: You play as Super Mario who is on a quest to rescue Princess Toadstool (Peach). Mario visits her castle after receiving a letter from the Princess that she had baked him a cake. Upon arriving to the castle, he receives another message from Bowser (King of the koopa lizards) that he has trapped the princess in the upper part of the castle and that to get to her he must defeat him.

3. Explain your experiences with each of these games:

a) Spyro the Dragon: You played this first and completed it 100%

b) Super Mario 64: You played this more recently among friends and had a lot of fun with it

4. Compare each games mechanics and how they play on each console's controllers

a) Spyro the Dragon: You can walk, run, jump, glide, and breathe fire

b) Super Mario 64: You can walk, run, jump, wall jump, super jump, ground pound, and use various power ups

5. Explain why you think Spyro is the better platformer

a) The PS1 controller is much more comfortable to play on

b) Spyro's moveset is more varied than Mario's

c) The plot of Spyro is more original

d) The settings in Spyro are more fantastical Stewart Copeland did an amazing job on the Spyro soundtrack.
